Homes for the Homeless Camp Lanowa

On any given night 780 children rest their heads in one of HFH ‘s family shelters in the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. Since 1989 HFH Summer Camps have welcomed nearly 19,000 children from NYC who are experiencing homelessness to enjoy a summer camp adventure at Camp Lanowa. Kids aged 7 to 12 get to explore nature, learn to swim in the lake, and cherish all the unforgettable moments that come with the sleepaway camp experience.
Before coming to HFH Summer Camps, most HFH campers have never left New York City, and many have never experienced the wonder and excitement of nature first hand. Most campers have never fished, sat around a campfire, or learned how to swim. HFH Summer Camps offer a welcome opportunity for children experiencing homelessness to escape the stresses of everyday life, and to engage in fun, healthy, and educational activities.
Each summer, three sessions are offered at HFH Summer Camps. These sessions provide participants with a level of routine, safety, and stability that many have not experienced, as the chaos of changing homes and schools repeatedly can give children experiencing homelessness the impression that their lives will always be in transition. At Camp Lanowa, campers enjoy and eagerly anticipate their favorite activities from swimming and boating to telling stories around a campfire and having sleepovers with their new friends.

Staff Time Off

Most staff days off occur in between sessions. An additional day will be given during the staff orientation period.

Staff Qualities

Staff who work well at Camp Lanowa are patient, dedicated men and women who are open to learning new strategies, games, activities and must communicate effectively. Backgrounds in social work, youth work, psychology, and education are best suited.
