Camp Overview
Situated on 400 acres in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains in Brevard, NC, Gwynn Valley has been a summer camp for boys and girls since 1935.
We offer a farm, wilderness, and traditional program where we foster community building, lifelong friendships, and a connection with the land. Our founder, Mary Gwynn created a camp based on the values of simplicity, acceptance, a non-competitive program, and an appreciation of the natural world. These core values continue to be embraced at Gwynn Valley today. Through community, new adventures, and fun and engaging program participation, we strive to help our campers develop resilience, responsibility, cooperative skills, confidence, and personal independence. Throughout camp’s history, the philosophy, values, and traditions have remained constant. The strength of Gwynn Valley is its nurturing environment in a child centered world where each camper will learn and grow under the guidance of a mature and caring staff.

Staff Time Off
All staff are given one day off a week (22 - 26 hours) the length of which depends on what length session we are running at the time. During a staff members time off they are able to leave camp property and see the local sites. We try and schedule time off so people are able to get rides into town with their fellow staff members and have people to spend time with. In addition to their day off, staff also have several hours off which are spread throughout the day. These times are dependent on the staff members position. During these hours, staff must remain onsite though they are allowed to go off site for a run, if they choose, relax in our staff living room where they are allowed to use their electronics.
Staff Qualities
We hire creative, fun, inspiring individuals who demonstrate a desire to work with younger children and who have strong character, leadership skills, and experience to teach in our program areas. Our counselors are at least 18 years old and most have finished their freshman year of college or equivalent.
Camp counseling is serious business and is only for those diligent people who can put the campers needs before their own. We train staff for the various activities they will work in, though we require our program leaders to come in with more skills in their activity as they are the set teacher.
