Camp Overview

One of our core values at camp is creation care.  We think it is important that everyone visiting our property experiences God’s creation and learns how to take care of it.  That’s why our campers and summer staff spend ~85% of their day outside during the camp week.  Activities and buildings are spread around the property, so everyone’s main transportation is hiking.  It is safe to assume while working here, during camp weeks you will walk between 3-5 miles during the day.  There are no physical requirements that we have for summer staff.  We ask that you consider how much walking you will be doing in the summer heat, which is an average of 85 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer with humidity in the high seventies to low eighties.  During staff training, there will be plenty of time to work on building up your walking legs, so don’t feel discouraged!

Staff Time Off

There will be times during the summer season when camp will not be in session. During those times, summer staff will work from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm with an hour off in the middle for lunch. When camp is in session, it is a physically, emotionally, and mentally demanding job. It is also the hardest job you’ll ever love! During the camp weeks, summer staff work starting at 7 am and finishing around 10 pm and enjoy one day off each week. Each staff member will also be given an hour off during the day to recharge and recover for the rest of the day. This can be going for a walk, taking a nap, or eating their favorite candy while scrolling through social media on their phone. During break times, our campers will be away from the buildings where staff need to be so that they truly have privacy. This includes their living spaces, the bathrooms, and a meeting space in our dining hall connected to a kitchenette.

Staff Qualities

At Spring Heights, our summer staff fill many roles. We hire people to run the challenge course and lead horses at the barn, and staff may be asked to fill any role at any time. Summer camp takes many moving parts to run smoothly and gives campers the best time of their lives while also learning about God. Counselors in charge of campers are often trained to work at the challenge course or be a lifeguard at the pool. We are looking for staff who can be flexible, think on their feet, and be willing to learn. If they have those qualities, we want to work with them and provide the training they need to succeed! There are so many more things to say about what our camp offers and what staff can expect when working here, but if we wrote it all out, we’d have a small book! We encourage potential staff to call our office at 1-304-927-5865 and ask us ANY question they have concerning working for our summer program.
